Hair and beauty interview questions in the UK, for non-native English speakers

A salon owner may look for a careful consultation, hygiene between clients and a friendly manner that brings clients back. Below are 6 questions you may hear in the UK, with what each one checks and a simple answer shape you can say in B1 English.

What a hair and beauty recruiter in the UK may look for

The points on this page are things a recruiter may look for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide, and preparing does not promise a result. It shows you what to practise next.

  • A salon owner may look for a careful consultation, hygiene between clients and a friendly manner that brings clients back.
  • A recruiter may ask you to do a trade test or a model, so be ready to show your skills on the day.

How interviews often run in the UK

These published notes describe general preparation. They do not confirm one employer's process. Check your invitation, and ask the recruiter if anything is unclear.

  • Some larger employers run a recorded video interview first: a question appears on screen, you get a short time to think, then a few minutes to answer with nobody watching live. Practise answering to a camera that does not react. (Source: hirevue.com, greenhouse.com)

Sentence starters for a hair and beauty interview

Fill in the gaps with your own work. Simple English is fine.

How do you start with a new client?

I greet the client and ask what they would like. I ask about their hair or skin, and any allergies or reactions before. I explain what I will do, how long it takes and the price. I check they are happy before I start, and again at the end.

A time a client was not happy

The client was not happy because … I listened and did not argue. I offered to … and checked with my manager. In the end the client … and now I always … at the start.

Common mistakes for non-native speakers

In the UK, interviewers often like a real example more than big words. Say what you did and the result, then stop. The evidence you give is the same; only the way you say it changes.

  • Instead of "I do all treatments": say: "I am trained in…, and I am still learning…". Being clear about your skills may build trust with a salon manager.
  • Instead of starting work straight away in a role-play: Start with a short consultation: "What would you like today?". A consultation shows you listen before you work.
  • Instead of "The client was difficult": Say what the client wanted, what you offered and how they left. It shows how you solve problems, without blame.
  • Instead of "I keep clean": say: "I clean my tools and my station between every client". Hygiene steps are easier to believe than a general claim.
