  • A recruiter may listen for results in numbers and honest relationships with customers.

How interviews often run in Nigeria

These published notes describe general preparation. They do not confirm one employer's process. Check your invitation, and ask the recruiter if anything is unclear.

  • Graduate and financial-services hiring is often multi-stage: an online aptitude test, then a group exercise, then an HR interview, then a panel of several interviewers. Prepare for each stage on its own. (Source: glassdoor.com, blisshr.africa)
  • In a panel, answer the person who asked and then bring the others in with your eyes. Etiquette guides for this market commonly describe formal address ('Sir', 'Ma') with senior interviewers. (Source: ophyai.com)

Sentence starters for a sales interview

Fill in the gaps with your own work. Simple English is fine.

A sale you are proud of

The customer needed … I asked questions and found out … I offered … because … They bought … / the result was … I learned …

When you missed a target

My target was … and I reached … The reason was … I changed … (more calls / better follow-up / new customers). Next month, I reached …

Common mistakes for non-native speakers

In Nigeria, interviews often start with a friendly talk. Answer each question fully. Your results can come later in the talk. The evidence you give is the same; only the order changes.

  • Instead of "I am a good seller": say: "A customer needed…, I suggested…, and they bought…". A sales manager may listen for the customer's need, not only the sale.
  • Instead of pushing hard in a role-play: say: "Can I ask what you use now, and what you would like to change?". Questions first often sound more professional than pressure.
  • Instead of "I hit my targets": Say what the target was about and what you did each week to reach it. The method is easier to believe than a claim.
  • Instead of "No" to an objection: say: "I understand. Can I ask what worries you about it?". It keeps the conversation open.
