Example answers
These are the example answers from the episode. They are examples to learn from, not scripts to copy: use your own experience and your own words.
Question 1: Our rota includes weekends and some early starts. How would that work with the rest of your week?
Yes, I can work weekends and early starts. In my last job at a care home, I worked every second weekend and started at 7 am. I live near the bus route, and the first bus gets me there 20 minutes early. If a bus is cancelled, I call my manager before my shift. In the end, I was not late once in a year.
Question 2: Tell me about yourself.
I am a care worker with experience in home care. In my current job I visit several clients each day. I help with washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, and I write clear notes after each visit. I want to work in a residential home now, because I would like to know the residents well and work closely with a team.
Question 3: Walk me through how you record a client's care at the end of a visit.
I write what care I gave, what the client ate and drank, and any change in mood or skin. I write facts, not opinions, before I leave the house. If something is unusual, I call the office the same day.
Question 4: Why should we hire you?
I think I am a good fit because I already do the main parts of this job. I support people with personal care, I respect their choices, and I write clear notes for the next carer. I also stay calm when someone is confused or upset. I would bring the same steady care to your residents from my first week.
Question 5: Tell me about a time you supported someone whose language or culture was different from yours.
I cared for an older man who spoke very little English. I learned a few words in his language and used pictures to ask about food and washing. His daughter told me about his prayer times, so I planned his care around them. After that, he was calmer and smiled more.
One tip for each question
- Question 1: What they really want to know is this: Will you turn up for the shifts the rota actually needs? Two things to cover: clear days and times you can work, and how you will travel for an early start.
- Question 2: To sound more suitable, finish with why this setting fits you (home care, residential or nursing). It answers their next question before they ask it.
- Question 3: What they really want to know is this: Can you keep accurate, timely records that the next person can rely on? Two things to cover: what you record (care given, food, mood, changes), and when you record it.
- Question 4: To sound more suitable, reuse the words from the job advert, like "personal care" or "care plans", if they are in it.
- Question 5: What they really want to know is this: Can you give respectful care when you do not share a language or habits? Two things to cover: how you learned what the person wanted, and simple words, gestures or pictures you used.
