Interview Setup Checklist

Complete this checklist before your video interview.

Check your room

Most people cannot see their own lighting problem — your eyes adjust to the room, the camera does not. This takes about five seconds and measures what the interviewer will actually see and hear.

Nothing is recorded, uploaded or kept. Your camera image becomes two numbers and is thrown away; the sound never leaves this page.

The part we cannot check: whether somebody will walk in. Tell the people you live with the time, put a note on the door, and take the interview in the room with a door that closes.

Technical Setup

Internet Connection

Stable connection is essential for video interviews.

  • •Use a wired ethernet connection if possible
  • •Close streaming services and downloads
  • •Have a backup plan: mobile hotspot or phone number
  • •Test your speed at fast.com — aim for 5 Mbps upload

Camera Setup

Position your camera at eye level for natural eye contact.

  • •Camera at eye level — use books or a stand to raise it
  • •Look at the camera (not the screen) when speaking
  • •Head and shoulders should fill the frame
  • •Check your background is tidy or use a subtle blur

Microphone & Audio

Clear audio is more important than video quality.

  • •Use headphones with a built-in microphone
  • •Test your mic in the platform settings before the call
  • •Mute yourself when not speaking if there is background noise
  • •Speak at a normal pace (130-150 words per minute)

Interview Platform

Know your tools before the interview starts.

  • •Download and test the platform the day before
  • •Join 5 minutes early to check everything works
  • •Know where the mute, camera, and share buttons are
  • •Have the meeting link copied and ready

Your Environment

Lighting

Good lighting makes you look professional and engaged.

  • •Face a window for natural light — light in front, not behind
  • •Avoid overhead-only lighting (creates shadows)
  • •Use a desk lamp pointed at the wall for soft light
  • •Test on camera — your face should be evenly lit

Quiet Environment

Minimise distractions and background noise.

  • •Find a quiet room and close the door
  • •Turn off phone notifications and put phone on silent
  • •Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications
  • •If you have pets, arrange care during the call

Personal Preparation

What to Wear

Dress professionally from head to waist at minimum.

  • •Dress as you would for an in-person interview
  • •Solid colours work best on camera
  • •Dress fully — you may need to stand up unexpectedly
  • •When in doubt, slightly overdress

Timing & Preparation

Be ready well before the interview starts.

  • •Set up everything 30 minutes before
  • •Have a glass of water nearby
  • •Keep your CV and notes off-camera but within reach
  • •Prepare 2-3 questions to ask the interviewer

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
