"What would you do if you made a mistake at work?" answer template (A2, B1, B2)
How to use this template
Choose the level that fits your English and fill every blank with a true detail from your own work, in 3 parts: Stop and check, Tell and Fix and prevent. Plan your example on the STAR worksheet, tick the checklist, then say the answer out loud.
A2 template: simple English
Short sentences, one idea in each. Good if your English is basic or you feel nervous.
- Stop and check: First, I stop and check. Is it about ________ (safety, a customer or money)?
- Tell: I tell my ________ (supervisor or manager) quickly.
- Fix and prevent: I help to fix it. Next time I ________ (change).
B1 template: linked sentences
Joins your ideas with because, and, then and so. Good for most interviews.
- Stop and check: First, I would stop and check how serious it is, starting with ________ (safety or the customer).
- Tell: Then I would tell ________ (supervisor or manager) quickly and honestly, even if ________ (difficult part).
- Fix and prevent: I would help to fix it and change ________ (one thing) so it does not happen again. For example, ________ (short example from this job).
B2 template: fuller answer
Adds a reason, a result and a little more detail. Use it if you can say it without reading.
- Stop and check: My first step would be to assess the impact, in this order: ________ (safety, the customer, the money).
- Tell: I would inform ________ (who) straight away, explaining ________ (what happened and what I had already done).
- Fix and prevent: After fixing it, I would introduce ________ (check or habit); in a ________ (job) role, that might mean ________ (concrete example).
STAR worksheet: plan your example
Your answer needs one true example. Plan it here in notes, not full sentences, then use it in the "Tell" part of the template.
Situation
Where you were, and what was happening. One or two lines.
Task
What you had to do. What was your responsibility?
Action
What YOU did, step by step. Use I, not we.
Result
How it ended. Add a number, a thank-you or a change if you have one.
Checklist before you say it
Tick each point when it is true for your answer.
- Stop and check: Say you would stop and check how serious it is — first for safety, then for the customer or the money.
- Tell: Say you would tell your supervisor quickly and honestly.
- Fix and prevent: Say you would help put it right, then change one thing so it does not happen again.
- Avoided: Saying "I never make mistakes." Everybody does, and the interviewer knows it.
- Out loud: I said the whole answer out loud, with only true details, in about one minute or less.
A finished answer to compare
This is one way a warehouse operative might answer. Compare it with your template: the same parts, with real details. Do not copy it.
Warehouse Operative answer
If I picked the wrong item or damaged a product, I would stop, report it to my team leader and follow the process for damaged stock, even if the order was already packed. A wrong delivery takes far longer to fix later. Then I would check where I went wrong, for example the location label, and scan more carefully on similar items.

Questions people ask
Should I learn the template answer by heart?
No. Learn the order of the 3 parts (Stop and check, Tell and Fix and prevent) and your own details, then say it in your own words. A memorised answer can sound flat, and an interviewer may ask a follow-up question.
Which level should I use for "What would you do if you made a mistake at work?"?
Use the level you can say without reading. If you are not sure, start with A2, say it out loud twice, and move to B1 when it feels easy. A short, clear answer is better than a long one that is hard to follow.
How do I print this template?
