"Tell me about yourself" answer template (A2, B1, B2)

How to use this template

Choose the level that fits your English and fill every blank with a true detail from your own work, in 3 parts: Now, Proof and Why here. Plan your example on the STAR worksheet, tick the checklist, then say the answer out loud.

A2 template: simple English

Short sentences, one idea in each. Good if your English is basic or you feel nervous.

  1. Now: I am a ________ (your job). I have done this work for ________ (number) years.
  2. Proof: I am good at ________ (one skill). For example, I ________ (one thing you did well).
  3. Why here: I want this job because ________ (one reason).

B1 template: linked sentences

Joins your ideas with because, and, then and so. Good for most interviews.

  1. Now: I have worked as a ________ (your job) for ________ (time), most recently at ________ (type of workplace).
  2. Proof: One thing I do well is ________ (skill). For example, at my last job I ________ (real task or result).
  3. Why here: I am applying for this role because ________ (what attracts you), and it fits my experience in ________ (area).

B2 template: fuller answer

Adds a reason, a result and a little more detail. Use it if you can say it without reading.

  1. Now: I am currently a ________ (job title) with ________ (time) of experience in ________ (sector), mainly ________ (main duties).
  2. Proof: What I bring is ________ (key skill); for instance, at ________ (workplace) I ________ (action), which led to ________ (result).
  3. Why here: I am looking for ________ (what you want next), and this role stands out because ________ (detail from the advert).

STAR worksheet: plan your example

Your answer needs one true example. Plan it here in notes, not full sentences, then use it in the "Proof" part of the template.

Situation

Your job now, where you do it, and how long you have done it.

Task

One task in that job that also matters in the job you want.

Action

One thing you did well in that task: a real moment, with a place or a number.

Result

What happened because of it: a result, a comment from someone, or a number.

Checklist before you say it

Tick each point when it is true for your answer.

  • Now: Say who you are today: your job title and how long you have done this work.
  • Proof: Give one example or skill that fits this role.
  • Why here: Say why you want this job now.
  • Avoided: Telling your life story from school onwards. Start from your current work, not your childhood.
  • Out loud: I said the whole answer out loud, with only true details, in about one minute or less.

A finished answer to compare

This is one way a barista might answer. Compare it with your template: the same parts, with real details. Do not copy it.

Barista answer

I have worked as a barista for two years in a high-street coffee shop. I am quick and consistent on espresso and milk, and I know most of our regulars and their usual order. I am applying here because you train your staff properly, and I want to keep improving my coffee.

Questions people ask

Should I learn the template answer by heart?

No. Learn the order of the 3 parts (Now, Proof and Why here) and your own details, then say it in your own words. A memorised answer can sound flat, and an interviewer may ask a follow-up question.

Which level should I use for "Tell me about yourself"?

Use the level you can say without reading. If you are not sure, start with A2, say it out loud twice, and move to B1 when it feels easy. A short, clear answer is better than a long one that is hard to follow.

How do I print this template?
