These are habits, not mistakes about intelligence — your first language works differently, and it shows through under interview pressure.
Continuous for simple present
Often said: I am managing 5 people.
Instead: I manage 5 people.
Article dropping
Often said: I am developer.
Instead: I am a developer.
'Doubt' for 'question'
Often said: I have a doubt.
Instead: I have a question.
Direct translation of politeness
Often said: Kindly do the needful.
Instead: Could you please help?

What is expected of your English
Native-like fluency expected for most professional roles
High — UK is multicultural. Clarity matters more than accent.
Bengali → UK data
UK data interviews reward understated competence over enthusiasm. The Bengali habit of polite extended preamble ('Sir, with your kind permission, I would like to mention that...') reads as evasive in UK competency interviews. Lead with the answer; mention the politeness in tone, not in word count.
Phrases that carry weight here
- I built the [pipeline / dashboard / model] that [specific business outcome] — measured by [metric].
- The trade-off was [X]. I chose [Y] because [Z], and the result was [outcome].
- Happy to walk through that in more detail — what aspect would be most useful?
Where this pairing usually stumbles
- Apologising for English ('Sorry sir, my English is not so good') — never do this in a UK interview; it tags you as low-confidence
- Pronunciation of 'v' / 'w' (very/where) — practice these specifically; Bengali doesn't distinguish them
- Describing context ('In Bangladesh we used to...') without translating the relevance — always end with what it means for THIS role

- How does the team think about the balance between ad-hoc analysis and core dashboard maintenance?
- What's a typical first 90-day expectation here?
- Which stakeholder does the data team find hardest to support, and how is that being addressed?
