Dental Nurse interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A dental nurse interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you support the dentist during a procedure". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common dental nurse interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years as a dental nurse, setting, registration (e.g. GDC) if applicable, and one strength.
  • How do you support the dentist during a procedure?: Anticipate what's needed, work four-handed, keep the field clear, and watch the patient throughout.
  • How do you keep infection control through the day?: Follow the decontamination protocol, wear PPE, sterilise instruments, and clean surfaces between patients.
  • How do you reassure an anxious patient?: Warm tone, explain what's happening, watch for distress, and let them know they can pause.
  • What would you do if a sterilisation step was missed?: Stop, flag it, don't use those instruments, and follow the protocol. Patient safety first.

What a dental nurse interviewer may be listening for

  • Anticipating the dentist: Knowing the instrument before it is asked for is the visible skill. Give an example from a specific procedure.
  • Cross-infection control: Decontamination sequence, zoning, and what you would do if a step was missed.
  • Managing an anxious patient: Often it is you, not the dentist, the patient talks to. Describe how you settle someone before treatment.
  • Accurate charting: Recording what was actually done, immediately. Errors here become clinical and legal problems later.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
