Dentist interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A dentist interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you manage an anxious patient". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common dentist interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years as a dentist, setting (NHS, private, hospital), your registration status (e.g. GDC), and one strength.
  • How do you manage an anxious patient?: Explain each step, go slowly, agree a stop signal ('raise your hand to pause'), and build trust before treating.
  • How do you handle a complication during a procedure?: Stay calm, manage the patient first, follow the protocol, document it, and communicate clearly.
  • How do you keep up with clinical standards?: Name your CPD and evidence-based practice, with one example of applying updated guidance.
  • How do you respond to a complaint about treatment?: Listen, don't get defensive, explain, resolve it fairly, and document. Patient trust comes first.

What a dentist interviewer may be listening for

  • Managing anxiety clinically: A stop signal, explaining before doing, shorter appointments. Interviewers listen for technique, not reassurance.
  • Presenting options honestly: Save or extract, cost and consequence, then the patient decides. Pressure is the failure mode they are screening for.
  • Owning a complication: What you did at the time and what you changed since. Claiming none reads as inexperience.
  • Working with the nurse and the list: Running to time without rushing care is a practice-management skill they will probe.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
