Domestic Helper interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A domestic helper interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you keep young children safe". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common domestic helper interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years of experience, named duties (childcare, elderly care, cooking, cleaning), one strength and why this family or agency.
  • How do you keep young children safe?: Constant supervision, a safe environment, a steady routine, age-appropriate activities. Give one real example.
  • What if your employer wants a task done a different way to yours?: Listen respectfully, explain your way calmly, then follow their preference. Stay professional and find a respectful middle.
  • How do you manage many duties in one day?: Prioritise and plan the day; do safety-critical tasks (children, elderly) first; keep the home running smoothly.
  • How do you care for an elderly person with limited mobility?: Dignity first, safe transfers, patience, watch for changes, and report concerns. One concrete example.

What a domestic helper interviewer may be listening for

  • Trust in someone's home: Discretion, care with belongings, and what you do if you break something. Honesty is the answer they are listening for.
  • Working to the household's way: Following the family's routine rather than your own preference, and raising a disagreement privately.
  • Managing your own time: Describing how you plan a day without supervision shows you need less of it.
  • Safety with children or older adults: If the role includes care, expect a question about an emergency and the sequence you would follow.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
