Midwife interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A midwife interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you support a woman through a difficult labour". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common midwife interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years as a midwife, setting (hospital, community), registration (e.g. NMC), and one strength.
  • How do you support a woman through a difficult labour?: Calm presence, clear communication, advocacy for her choices, follow protocol, keep her informed and safe.
  • How do you respond to an obstetric emergency?: Stay calm, call for help, follow the escalation protocol, document, and communicate clearly with the team.
  • How do you give culturally sensitive care?: Respect beliefs and preferences, communicate clearly, involve family appropriately. Give one example.
  • What would you do if you had a safeguarding concern?: Act immediately, follow the safeguarding policy, escalate to the right person, and document.

What a midwife interviewer may be listening for

  • Advocacy without overriding: Supporting a plan you have concerns about, informing clearly, and documenting the discussion.
  • Escalation timing: What you observed, who you called and how quickly you called them. Specificity here is the competence being assessed.
  • Communication across a language barrier: Interpreter services rather than family members, and checking understanding actively.
  • Presence in loss: Staying with a bereaved family rather than retreating into procedure is something interviewers listen for carefully.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
