Nanny interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A nanny interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you keep children safe during the day". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common nanny interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years caring for children, the ages you've cared for, one strength (patience, reliability), and why this family.
  • How do you keep children safe during the day?: Constant supervision, a safe environment, first-aid knowledge, and the family's rules. Give one example.
  • How do you handle a tantrum or difficult behaviour?: Stay calm, acknowledge feelings, set clear boundaries, and redirect. Consistency matters most.
  • How do you support a child's development?: Age-appropriate play, a steady routine, reading, and encouragement — tailored to the child.
  • What if the parents want a routine done differently to you?: Listen, respect their wishes, explain your view calmly, then follow their lead. Stay professional.

What a nanny interviewer may be listening for

  • Following the parents' approach: Consistency with the family's rules, and raising disagreements privately rather than in front of the child.
  • Emergency readiness: Your first aid training and the sequence you would follow, said calmly. Parents are listening for composure as much as knowledge.
  • Honest handovers: A short accurate account of the day, including the parts that went badly. A handover that is always positive stops being believed.
  • Age-appropriate planning: One real activity you ran and why it suited that child beats a general philosophy.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
