Physiotherapist interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A physiotherapist interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you build rapport with a nervous patient". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common physiotherapist interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years as a physio, area (MSK, neuro, hospital), registration (e.g. HCPC), and one strength.
  • How do you build rapport with a nervous patient?: Explain clearly, set expectations, listen, go at their pace, and gain consent before you start.
  • Describe a complex case you managed.: Use STAR: your assessment, the treatment plan, how you adjusted it, and the outcome.
  • What do you do when a patient isn't progressing as expected?: Reassess, adjust the plan, involve the wider team, and manage expectations honestly.
  • How do you ensure safe manual handling?: Risk-assess, use correct technique and equipment, and protect both yourself and the patient.

What a physiotherapist interviewer may be listening for

  • Goals the patient owns: Motivation is built by making goals small and theirs, not by encouragement.
  • Reassessment when it is not working: Noticing, reassessing, changing the plan. The skill being tested is noticing.
  • Teaching without shared language: Demonstrate, use fewer words, ask them to show you rather than asking if they understand.
  • Outcome measures: Naming the ones you have actually used and what they told you about progress.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
