Personal Support Worker interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A personal support worker interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How would you support a client with dementia who is sundowning". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common personal support worker interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences. Care experience, why PSW work in Canada, named skill (e.g., transfers, dementia care, end-of-life).
  • How would you support a client with dementia who is sundowning?: Lower stimulation, calm tone, familiar items in view, validate feelings, redirect gently. Don't argue with their reality.
  • Describe a time you advocated for a client's preference.: Specific example. Client preference + how you communicated it to the care team + outcome.
  • How do you protect a client's privacy and dignity during personal care?: Door closed, towels for coverage, narrate each step, ask before touching, offer choices where possible.
  • What would you do if a client refused care?: Respect refusal. Ask why calmly. Try again later. Document. Inform the supervising nurse. Never coerce.

What a personal support worker interviewer may be listening for

  • Supporting independence: Helping with what someone cannot do rather than doing everything. This is the philosophy they are hiring for.
  • Behaviour that becomes challenging: Staying calm, what you changed about your approach, and who you told afterwards. De-escalation and reporting are both being assessed.
  • Records as fact: Writing what happened rather than what you concluded, and writing it at the time rather than at the end of the shift.
  • Emergency sequence: Arriving to find a client on the floor: check them, do not move them, call for help, then report it. The order is the answer.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
