Radiographer interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A radiographer interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you keep patients safe with radiation". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common radiographer interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years as a radiographer, modality (X-ray, CT, MRI), registration (e.g. HCPC), and one strength.
  • How do you keep patients safe with radiation?: Justify and optimise (ALARP), check ID and pregnancy status, use correct settings, and protect non-target areas.
  • How do you handle a frightened or uncooperative patient?: Explain, reassure, go at their pace, and position carefully to gain cooperation.
  • What do you do if you spot an unexpected critical finding?: Follow the alert pathway, inform the radiologist or clinician promptly, and document it.
  • How do you maintain image quality?: Correct positioning and settings, check before sending, and only repeat when it's justified.

What a radiographer interviewer may be listening for

  • Justification: The referral criteria and what you would do with an inadequate request.
  • Dose discipline: Collimation, shielding, and avoiding repeats through better positioning.
  • Managing a patient who cannot stay still: Explanation first, then support, then immobilisation, and asking for help rather than repeating an image you know will fail.
  • Unexpected findings: Flagging it through the agreed pathway immediately, without offering a diagnosis that is not yours to give.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
