Receptionist interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A receptionist interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you handle a difficult visitor or caller". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common receptionist interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: front-desk or admin experience, named setting, one strength (organisation, calm under pressure) with an example.
  • How do you handle a difficult visitor or caller?: Stay calm and polite, listen, acknowledge the issue, then solve it or escalate it clearly.
  • How do you juggle phones, visitors, and tasks at once?: Prioritise the person in front of you and urgent calls, keep a system, and never look flustered.
  • How do you handle confidential information?: Be discreet, follow data/GDPR rules, and never discuss sensitive details in public areas.
  • How do you represent the company at first contact?: Warm, professional, helpful — you set the first impression for everyone who arrives.

What a receptionist interviewer may be listening for

  • First impression: You are the company for the first thirty seconds. Warmth and competence together, not one or the other.
  • Two demands at once: Phone ringing and a queue at the desk. They want your actual order of priority.
  • Discretion: Knowing what you do not repeat, and knowing that a reception desk is a public space where it should not be discussed at all.
  • Diary accuracy: Your habit for double-checking an entry, and what you actually do when you find two bookings in the same slot.

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
