Security Guard interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A security guard interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you handle an aggressive person". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common security guard interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: years in security, named setting (retail, events, corporate), one strength (vigilance, de-escalation), plus your SIA licence if you hold one.
  • How do you handle an aggressive person?: Stay calm, keep a safe distance, use clear non-threatening language, call for backup, never escalate. Safety first.
  • What would you do if you saw someone shoplifting?: Observe and report per procedure — don't pursue or accuse. Note a description, inform your supervisor or police, follow the law.
  • How do you stay alert on a long, quiet shift?: Regular patrols, vary the routine, keep moving, log your checks. Complacency is the real risk.
  • Walk me through how you'd respond to a fire alarm.: Know the evacuation plan, direct people calmly to exits, check areas only if safe, report to the assembly point.

What a security guard interviewer may be listening for

  • Observation and recording: What you noticed, when, and how you logged it. Vague answers read as someone who does not write things down.
  • De-escalation first: Talking a situation down rather than physical intervention, and knowing when to call police.
  • Following procedure under pressure: Interviewers want someone who does not improvise on a fire alarm or an intruder.
  • Presence: Being visible and approachable prevents far more than it responds to. Most of this job is the incident that never starts.
