What a retail assistant recruiter in Singapore may look for

The points on this page are things a recruiter may look for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide, and preparing does not promise a result. It shows you what to practise next.

  • A manager may look for fast, accurate service and calm handling of complaints.
  • A recruiter may listen for sales results and how you serve customers in different languages.

How interviews often run in Singapore

These published notes describe general preparation. They do not confirm one employer's process. Check your invitation, and ask the recruiter if anything is unclear.

  • Interviews usually open with 'Tell me about yourself'. The government careers service publishes guidance on that self-introduction, so prepare a one-minute version. (Source: content.mycareersfuture.gov.sg)

Common mistakes for non-native speakers

In Singapore, interviewers often like you to say your result clearly. Say "I did this", not "I helped a little". The evidence you give is the same; only the way you say it changes.

  • Instead of "The customer was angry and I said calm down": say: "I listened, said sorry for the problem and offered to check the stock or call my manager". A recruiter may notice whether you calm the situation or add to it.
  • Instead of "I am honest": say: "One day my till was short at the end of the shift. I told my supervisor straight away and we counted it together". An example shows honesty more clearly than the word.
  • Instead of "I don't know": say: "Let me check that for you". It keeps the customer with you while you find the answer.
  • Instead of a very long story: About one minute: what happened, what you did, how it ended. Short answers leave time for the interviewer's follow-up questions.
