The question for 12 October 2026

Tell me about yourself.

About this question

  • Type: Introducing yourself
  • Usually asked: Start of the interview
  • Job: Any job
  • Country: Any country

What the interviewer may be listening for

These are things an interviewer may listen for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide. Practising helps you prepare; it does not promise a result.

  • An interviewer may use this first answer to decide how easy you are to follow. They are likely to listen for a clear order, one real detail about your work, and a link to this job. A long life story is a common concern.

A 3-line answer shape

Say these in order. Use short sentences and one true example from your own life.

  1. Now: Say who you are today: your job title and how long you have done this work. One sentence.
  2. Proof: Give one example or skill that fits this role. Use a real detail — a place you worked, a number, a task you did well.
  3. Why here: Say why you want this job now. Keep the whole answer to about 60 to 90 seconds.

A weaker answer and a stronger answer

Read both answers, then compare them.

A weaker answer may sound like this

I was born in a small town. I finished school, then I studied, then I moved, and I had many jobs. I am a hard-working person.

Example from a care worker interview

I have worked as a care worker for four years, most recently in a residential home for older adults. I am calm with people who are anxious, and I am confident with personal care, medication support, and keeping clear records. I am applying here because your home focuses on dignity and small teams, which is how I like to work.

Why the stronger answer works better

Why the first one is weaker: Telling your life story from school onwards. Start from your current work, not your childhood.

Use the stronger one as a pattern, not a script. Change every detail to your own true story.

A2-friendly version

Simple English is fine. Start with one of these sentences and finish it with your own words:

  • I have worked as a … for … years.
  • Most recently, I …
  • One thing I do well is …

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
