"What makes you a good fit for this role?" answer template (A2, B1, B2)

How to use this template

Choose the level that fits your English and fill every blank with a true detail from your own work, in 3 parts: Skills, Way of working and Practical fit. Plan your example on the STAR worksheet, tick the checklist, then say the answer out loud.

A2 template: simple English

Short sentences, one idea in each. Good if your English is basic or you feel nervous.

  1. Skills: I have ________ (skill from the advert). I used it at ________ (where).
  2. Way of working: I like to work ________ (how: fast, in a team, with a routine).
  3. Practical fit: I can work ________ (shifts or hours). This job is good for me.

B1 template: linked sentences

Joins your ideas with because, and, then and so. Good for most interviews.

  1. Skills: I have ________ (skill from the advert), which I used at ________ (workplace) when I ________ (example).
  2. Way of working: I like to work ________ (pace or style), and from what I know, your team works the same way.
  3. Practical fit: I can also ________ (practical fit, such as shifts, travel or lifting), so the job fits me well.

B2 template: fuller answer

Adds a reason, a result and a little more detail. Use it if you can say it without reading.

  1. Skills: The advert asks for ________ (skill), and that is something I used daily at ________ (workplace), for example ________ (example).
  2. Way of working: In terms of working style, I do my best work ________ (pace and team style), which seems to match ________ (what you know about this workplace).
  3. Practical fit: On the practical side, I am ________ (practical fit), so overall I think ________ (one sentence that joins it all).

STAR worksheet: plan your example

Your answer needs one true example. Plan it here in notes, not full sentences, then use it in the "Way of working" part of the template.

Situation

What this job needs, in the words of the advert.

Task

One task in your past work that needed the same thing.

Action

What you did in that task.

Result

The result, and why it matters to this employer.

Checklist before you say it

Tick each point when it is true for your answer.

  • Skills: Name one or two skills from the job advert that you really have.
  • Way of working: Describe how you like to work: the pace, the team, the routine.
  • Practical fit: Add the practical side that fits: the shifts, the travel, the physical work, the type of customers.
  • Avoided: Talking only about skills. Fit is also about how you work and whether the job suits your life.
  • Out loud: I said the whole answer out loud, with only true details, in about one minute or less.

A finished answer to compare

This is one way a delivery driver might answer. Compare it with your template: the same parts, with real details. Do not copy it.

Delivery Driver answer

You need a driver who knows the area, keeps to time windows and is polite at the door, and that matches my three years of delivery work. I like working on my own during the day but keeping in touch with control when something changes. Your routes are mostly local, which suits my knowledge of the roads here.

Questions people ask

Should I learn the template answer by heart?

No. Learn the order of the 3 parts (Skills, Way of working and Practical fit) and your own details, then say it in your own words. A memorised answer can sound flat, and an interviewer may ask a follow-up question.

Which level should I use for "What makes you a good fit for this role?"?

Use the level you can say without reading. If you are not sure, start with A2, say it out loud twice, and move to B1 when it feels easy. A short, clear answer is better than a long one that is hard to follow.

How do I print this template?
