How to answer “Why should we choose you over other candidates” in a Customer Service Advisor interview
Short answer
Your mix → Proof → Respect. It never compares the person with others.
“Why should we choose you over other candidates” is one of the most common Customer Service Advisor interview questions in the UK. Here is a simple framework, a model answer you can adapt, and the mistakes that weaken a good answer.
The question
Why should we choose you over other candidates?
A simple framework for your answer
- Your mix: Name the combination that makes you useful: your experience plus one extra, such as another language, a certificate or local knowledge.
- Proof: Give one short, real example of that extra being useful at work.
- Respect: Do not talk about the other candidates. Say calmly what this employer gets with you, and stop there.
Example answer
I would rather tell you what I bring than compare: three years of phone and email support, plus Portuguese and some Spanish. In my last job I took calls from customers who found English difficult, and those calls were easier to solve because they could explain the problem clearly. I would bring calm, clear service in more than one language.
Why this works: It never compares the person with others. It names a real extra, proves it with one moment, and says what the employer gets.
The example is in English because that is what you will say in the interview. The guidance is here to help you build your own version.
Common pitfalls on this question
- Criticising other candidates. You have not met them, and it sounds unkind.
- Listing qualities every candidate says, like "hard-working" and "a fast learner", with no proof.
- Forgetting the extras you have, such as a first aid certificate, another language or a driving licence.
- Sounding arrogant. Calm and confident is stronger than loud.
Note for Customer Service Advisor roles in the UK
In the UK, customer service interviews score calm listening and first-contact resolution. Mention staying patient with upset customers and knowing when to escalate.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should my answer to “Why should we choose you over other candidates” be?
- Aim for about 45 to 60 seconds. Use the framework above to stay structured, and stop when you have made your point.
- Do I need perfect English to answer “Why should we choose you over other candidates”?
- No. Clear, structured English at a B1–B2 level is enough. Interviewers care more about whether they understand you than about perfect grammar.
- Should I memorise my answer word for word?
- No. Learn the shape, not a script. Memorised answers sound flat and fall apart under follow-up questions. Practise out loud in your own words.
