Sentence starters for a construction trades interview

Fill in the gaps with your own work. Simple English is fine.

What do you do if a job is not safe?

I stop work. I make the area safe and tell the people near me. I report it to the supervisor. I start again only when it is safe and agreed.

Tell me about a job you are proud of

The job was … on a … site. My part was … and I used … The hard part was … and I solved it by … It passed the check and the client …

Common mistakes for non-native speakers

In the UAE, interviews often start with a friendly talk. Answer each question fully. Your results can come later in the talk. The evidence you give is the same; only the order changes.

  • Instead of "I can do everything": Name the jobs you did: "wiring in new houses, from the first fix to the final testing". A site manager may listen for the work you have really done.
  • Instead of "Safety is important": Describe your steps: "I switch it off, test it and lock it off before I start.". Steps show you work safely; the word alone does not.
  • Instead of trade words from your country: Use the local word, or explain it: "the fuse box". A local interviewer may not know the word you learned first.
  • Instead of "No problem" on site when you are not sure: say: "Can you show me on the drawing, please?". Asking is safer than guessing on site.
