About this question

  • Type: Your work history
  • Usually asked: Screening call
  • Job: Any job
  • Country: Any country

What the interviewer may be listening for

These are things an interviewer may listen for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide. Practising helps you prepare; it does not promise a result.

  • That you can say what happened without becoming defensive or going quiet.
  • That you are not blaming everyone who was there — even where blame would be fair.
  • That it is finished, and you are not still fighting it.

A 3-line answer shape

Say these in order. Use short sentences and one true example from your own life.

  1. Name it plainly, in one sentence: Hesitating signals there is more to it. There usually is not.
  2. Give the scale, briefly: It puts it beyond doubt that this was about the business, not you.
  3. Say what you did next: Moves the answer from something that happened TO you to something you did.

A weaker answer and a stronger answer

Read both answers, then compare them.

A weaker answer may sound like this

Well, the company had money problems, and the new director made some bad decisions, and then they chose to keep other people, which was not fair…

A stronger answer

My role was made redundant in March when the team was restructured. About a third of the department went at the same time. I used the time to finish a qualification I had been putting off, and I have been applying for roles like this one since.

Why the stronger answer works better

Why the first one is weaker: Explaining the company's finances in detail — it is not your job to justify their decision.

Use the stronger one as a pattern, not a script. Change every detail to your own true story.

A2-friendly version

Simple English is fine. Start with one of these sentences and finish it with your own words:

  • My role ended in … because …
  • After that, I …
  • Now I am looking for …

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
