Kitchen Porter interview questions and answers for non-native English speakers

Short answer

A kitchen porter interview usually mixes general questions with questions about the job itself, such as "Tell me about yourself" and "How do you keep the kitchen hygienic during a busy service". Prepare one short, true example from your own work for each question, say what you did and how it ended, and practise saying it out loud in clear English.

Common kitchen porter interview questions

Each question has a short tip on how to answer it well in English.

  • Tell me about yourself.: Three sentences: experience in kitchens, named setting, one strength (speed, hygiene, reliability) with an example.
  • How do you keep the kitchen hygienic during a busy service?: Wash hands, separate clean and dirty, sanitise surfaces, keep the dishwasher flowing, clear waste. Hygiene never drops.
  • How do you cope when the dishes pile up fast?: Stay calm, do what the chefs need next first, keep a steady system, communicate. Don't panic.
  • What would you do if you saw a food-safety risk?: Report it to the chef or supervisor immediately, fix it if you safely can (e.g. a spill), never ignore it.
  • How do you work as part of the kitchen team?: Anticipate what's needed, communicate, help where it's busiest, keep your area clean. Reliability counts.

What a kitchen porter interviewer may be listening for

  • Keeping the wash-up ahead: If the pans stop, the kitchen stops. Say how you prioritise what the chefs need next.
  • Food hygiene basics: Separation, temperatures, cleaning schedules. Simple and correct beats detailed and vague.
  • Asking for help early: The failure mode is silently falling behind. Telling the chef before service slows is the answer they want.
  • Reliability: Attendance and pace are most of this job, and saying so plainly is not a weak answer.

What a good answer shows

  • Speed and stamina: They keep up during busy service and keep the wash-up area moving without falling behind.
  • Cleanliness and hygiene: They keep their area clean and follow hygiene rules to protect food safety.
  • Team support: They stay calm under pressure and help the kitchen team however they are needed.

Common mistakes, and what to do instead

  • Freezing when the dishwasher breaks mid-service instead of showing how you keep clean plates flowing.: Instead, describe how you wash by hand, prioritise, and tell the chef, so a recruiter sees you keep service going.
  • Reacting badly to being shouted at by a chef rather than staying calm during a busy night.: A recruiter may value composure, so instead show how you stay focused and keep the wash-up moving.
  • Saying you would 'just clean fast' without showing how you organise the wash-up area.: Instead, describe how you sort, stack, and keep a clear flow, as a recruiter may value organisation under pressure.
