Interview question of the day: 17 October 2026

The question for 17 October 2026

How do you prioritise your work?

About this question

  • Type: Behavioural (a real example)
  • Usually asked: Main interview
  • Job: Any job
  • Country: Any country

What the interviewer may be listening for

These are things an interviewer may listen for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide. Practising helps you prepare; it does not promise a result.

  • An interviewer is likely to listen for what YOU did, step by step, and how it ended. A recruiter may notice blame, a story told only with "we", or an answer that stops before the result.

A 3-line answer shape

Say these in order. Use short sentences and one true example from your own life.

  1. Rule: Start with your rule: safety and urgent needs come first, then tasks with a deadline, then the rest. Say it in one sentence.
  2. Example: Give one real shift where you had too much to do. Say what you did first and why.
  3. Communicate: Say how you keep others informed: you tell your manager or the team early if something will be late. That shows you are reliable.

A weaker answer and a stronger answer

Read both answers, then compare them.

A weaker answer may sound like this

I just do everything as fast as I can.

Example from a customer service advisor interview

I deal with urgent issues first, like a customer who has no service or a problem with a payment. Then I work through my queue in order, and I keep notes so nothing gets lost. If a case needs more time, I tell the customer when I will call back and I put a reminder in the system. I let my team leader know if the queue is growing faster than we can answer.

Why the stronger answer works better

Why the first one is weaker: Saying "I just do everything at once." It sounds busy, not organised.

Use the stronger one as a pattern, not a script. Change every detail to your own true story.

A2-friendly version

Simple English is fine. Start with one of these sentences and finish it with your own words:

  • The situation was …
  • My task was to …
  • First, I … Then I …

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
