Interview question of the day: 19 October 2026

The question for 19 October 2026

A customer says a product broke after a week. What do you do?

About this question

  • Type: Situational (what would you do?)
  • Usually asked: Main interview
  • Job: Retail assistant
  • Country: Australia

What the interviewer may be listening for

These are things an interviewer may listen for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide. Practising helps you prepare; it does not promise a result.

  • The interviewer may want to know: Do you handle returns fairly and follow the store's process?
  • A store manager may look for a friendly, relaxed manner and the days you can work.

A 3-line answer shape

Say these in order. Use short sentences and one true example from your own life.

  1. Line 1: Listening.
  2. Line 2: Checking the product and receipt.
  3. Line 3: Offering a fair option within policy.

A weaker answer and a stronger answer

Read both answers, then compare them.

A weaker answer may sound like this

No problem. I would stay calm and do my best.

What a stronger answer covers

A stronger answer is short and specific. It covers listening; checking the product and receipt; offering a fair option within policy. It uses one real example from your own work, told with "I", not "we".

Why the stronger answer works better

Why the first one is weaker: It does not say what you would do first, who you would tell, or how you would check the result.

Use the stronger one as a pattern, not a script. Change every detail to your own true story.

A2-friendly version

The question in simple words: "A customer says the product broke. What do you do?"

Simple English is fine. Start with one of these sentences and finish it with your own words:

  • First, I would …
  • I would tell … because …
  • Then I would check …

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
