The question for 23 October 2026

You have been out of work for a while — how has the search been going?

About this question

  • Type: After rejections
  • Usually asked: Screening call
  • Job: Any job
  • Country: Any country

What the interviewer may be listening for

These are things an interviewer may listen for. No page can tell you what one interviewer will decide. Practising helps you prepare; it does not promise a result.

  • That you volunteer it rather than waiting to be cornered.
  • That the reason is real — vague answers invite the follow-up you did not want.
  • That you did something with the time, even something small.

A 3-line answer shape

Say these in order. Use short sentences and one true example from your own life.

  1. Be matter-of-fact about the length: Hedging on the timeline suggests you are hiding something worse.
  2. Show it was selective, not stalled: There is a large difference between eight months of nothing and eight months of aiming at the right roles, and only you can tell them which it was.
  3. Name what you did with the time: Any concrete thing — a course, a project, volunteering, a certification — turns a gap into a period.

A weaker answer and a stronger answer

Read both answers, then compare them.

A weaker answer may sound like this

It has been terrible. I sent 200 applications and got 40 rejections. Nobody wants to hire people like me.

A stronger answer

I have been looking for about eight months. I have been targeting roles like this one rather than applying to everything, so it has taken longer. I finished a data analysis course in the spring and have been doing some volunteer bookkeeping.

Why the stronger answer works better

Why the first one is weaker: Listing how many applications you have sent or how many rejections you have had.

Use the stronger one as a pattern, not a script. Change every detail to your own true story.

A2-friendly version

Simple English is fine. Start with one of these sentences and finish it with your own words:

  • I have been looking for about … months.
  • I am looking for roles like …
  • In that time, I …

What this site cannot tell you

These pages describe what interviewers commonly look for. They cannot tell you what a specific interviewer decided, and nothing here guarantees an interview, an offer or a visa. Practising is preparation — it shows you what to fix next.
